The Dutch city of Rotterdam is expected to come to a standstill on Friday morning for the funeral of the politician Pim Fortuyn, who was shot dead on Monday. The cortege will set off from the one of the city's major landmarks, the Erasmus Bridge, towards the cathedral, where thousands of people filed past Fortuyn's coffin on Thursday as he lay in state. Thousands of people are also expected to line the route of the procession before the city's Roman Catholic bishop conducts the funeral Mass. A 32-year-old animal rights campaigner named as Volkert van der Graaf is being held in custody on suspicion of murdering Fortuyn.
