MALEEVA DEFEATED BY SERENA WILLIAMS AT GERMAN OPEN

Serena Williams bruised to German Open Quarterfinals beating Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva to reach the quarter-finals of the German Open with a 7-6 6-4 win. Fourth seed Williams, warming up in Berlin for the French Open starting on May 27 moved past the unseeded Maleeva in 93 minutes. The athletic American fought back from a break down in the first set to force a tie break, which she took 7-2 courtesy of her devastating serve. She broke her opponent in the third game of the second set before sealing victory with a service winner on her second match point. Williams will play either holder Amelie Mauresmo of France or Italy's Silvia Farina Elia for a spot the semifinals of the $1.224 million claycourt tournament. Jennifer Capriati needed 43 minutes to advance to Berlin Quarterfinals after beating Iroda Tulyaganova.
