Bulgaria's Energy and Economy Minister Petar Dimitrov said Saturday that the reopening of Units 3 and 4 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant would be the most sensible solution for the country's energy production before the new Belene NPP was completed.

Dimitrov took part at a forum in the Black Sea resort of Pomorie entitled "Bulgaria's Electricity Exports - Nuclear Facilities, Renewable Sources, and Other Perspectives", which is organized by the Atlantic Club and NATO's Information Center in Sofia.

The Energy Minister also announced that since Units 3 and 4 of the Kozloduy NPP were closed down in 2006 after a deal with the EU, Bulgaria's electricity exports had dropped by 30%.

He emphasized, however, that this had not affected the country's revenue because of the rising energy prices.

During the forum, Dimitrov also announced that Bulgaria ranked last in the EU in energy saving technologies and practices. He said the resort to renewable energy sources might be the way to salvage the situation with the energy exports.

The main purpose of Saturday's forum was to improve the coordination between businesses and the state in the field of energy production.
