I feel upbeat about the fate of nuclear power plants units 3 and 4, Emil Vapirev, head of the Committee for the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes, said upon his return from Vienna, but declined to specify concrete terms for their decommissioning. He recalled a conclusion back from 1992, according to which the two units can not be upgraded at a reasonable price. “The experience shows that this is not true. No negative opinions have been expressed regarding the two units. Bulgarian experts presented the second national report on the Convention on Nuclear Safety on April 18 in Vienna. The presentation aimed to reveal the high level of safety, achieved by Bulgaria's nuclear facilities. The final discussion of Bulgaria’s report was held on April 23. Bulgaria was represented by the Committee for the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes, Nuclear Power plant kozloduy, Civil Defense Agency and the parliamentary energy committee. Bulgaria is the only country with such a large-scale program for nuclear safety modernization, Vapirev pointed out. He also underlined the great sums that Bulgaria invests in conducting assessments by foreign organizations. Bulgaria presented its first report in September 1998.
