Plamen Yurukov, the leader of the Union of Democratic Forces, the party emblematic for Bulgaria's post-socialist transition in the 1990s, stated Thursday the country was a passive and already problematic member of the European Union.

This was how Yurukov explained the freezing of EU funds payments for Bulgaria pointing out that they would not be resumed until united Europe was sure that its taxpayers' money would be spent to the benefit of the Bulgarian citizens.

In his opinion no perpetrators would be found guilty in the five suits and three investigations procedures started Wednesday against officers from the Interior Ministry over allegations of corruption and connections with organized crime.

"I personally sincerely doubt that this government and the three-way coalition would have the will to change something", Yurukov declared.

He also pointed out that in the last two years Bulgaria completely lost track of its NATO members and had not made use of the advantages it offered.

"Our country is facing once again the choice to confirm its Euro-Atlantic orientation towards the states from the free and democratic world, and to abandon the old practices", the UDF leader declared.

Yurukov is in the northern Bulgarian city of Pleven for the celebrations of the city holiday.
