RIGHTIST OPPOSITION PROTESTED AGAINST CLASSIFIED INFO ACT

More than 3,000 supporters of the rightist opposition Union of Democratic forces April 27 to protest against the Classified Information Act. The rally was held under the motto “In the name of the truth”, which was opened by UDF leader Nadezhda Mihaylova. Former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov refused to take the floor despite the persistent calls of the people, gathered on the square between Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the Parliament. According to Mihaylova the Act on Classified Information is in fact an amnesty to the former political police in Bulgaria. “In this way all those who informed on their friends and relatives can participate in the governing of the state without worrying about anything, “ Mihaylova said. UDF leader called on the President to veto the Act. Parliament adopted the Classified Information Act April 24 after an almost one-week long debate. All documents of the Cabinet, concerning the country’s strategic potential as well as the Cabinet’s strategic orders and their realizations can be classified under the Classified Information Act. MPs of the UDF called the Parliament’s decision to revoke the State Security Records Act a shame and called on the other MPs to think about the risk of the institutions going under control of the former secret services. The State Security Records Act was revoked by the parliamentary majority April 18. Following the revoking of the Act, the commissions on records disclosure stopped working.
