The Muslim Cleric Council in Bulgaria have demanded the dismissal of Sofia City Court chair Svetlin Mihailov, accusing him of abuse of authority.

Clerics also want judge Rumyana Palikarova dismissed over forging documents related to the legal registration of the recent Muslim conference.

Muftis and imams in Bulgaria then declared they are to start a hunger strike if Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev does not order an investigation over the election of Mustafa Alis Haji for Chief Mufti.

According to the Council, the Muslim conference held on April 19, at which Haji was re-elected, was illegitimate.

Representative of the Muslim Cleric Council, Asim Haji Hasan said Mihailov took a bribe of BGN 300,000 in order to settle the election.

The conference was not organized by the Council but by Turkish ethnic party MRF, and we do not want the religion to be politicised, Hasan said.
