Together with St. George's Day, the Bulgarian mountain resort of Tryavna celebrated Tuesday the Day of the Wood-carver, and the 200th anniversary since the first bet of two wood-carver masters who competed into decorating the ceilings of the famous Daskalova House.

The Woor-carver's Day was marked with a procession from the Old Town square to the Daskalova House, which is a renown monument of Bulgaria's architecture from the Revival Period (18th-19th century), the Bulgarian private Darik Radio reported.

The procession was headed by the famous icon of St. George from the old church in Tryavna. At the Daskalova House the celebrations were opened by the Mayor of the town Dragomir Nikolov.

The woodcarver master usta Darin Bozhkov, who won last year's annual wood-carving bet in the resort town suggested publicly that all wood-carvers in the town unite to create a carved "Pillar of Tryavna".

Each of the Tryavna masters must carve one plate to fixed to the pillar by St. Dimitar's Day, which according to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church calendar is in October.

The legend (which is in fact a real story) about the first wood-carvers' bet says that on St. George's Day, 1808, the Tryavna master Dimitar Oshanetsa and his journeyman Ivan Bochukovetsa competed by carving the ceilings in two of the rooms in the Daskalova House.

The competitors carved two suns in the two ceilings, which still can be seen today, and the journeyman's sun is seen as symbolizing youth, whereas the master's is regarded as symbol of wisdom.

The bet was won by the master, who met successfully the challenge of his student after both of them worked for about six months.

The town of Tryavna is located in the Balkan Mountain in the central part of Bulgaria. It renown for its many architectural monuments, beautiful mountain nature, and its importance as one of the center of the Bulgarian National Revival Period, giving birth to many prominent historical figures.
