The Bush Administration has accused North Korea of helping Syria build a nuclear reactor intended for military purposes, the BBC reported.
The Al Kibar reactor under construction in northeast Syria was allegedly bombed and destroyed by Israel in a preemptive air strike on September 6, 2007.
The USA released Thursday information confirming that the facility at Al Kibar was indeed a nuclear reactor. What is more, it was one closely resembling the one at Yongbyon in North Korea, the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) reported.
The ISIS provided satellite pictures of the Al Kibar site in October, 2007, showing that the facility there had been razed to the ground after the Israeli bombing.
Syria has so far denied the allegations that what Israel destroyed had been a nuclear reactor. It has claimed there had been only an unused military facility at the Al Kibar site.
"The Syrian regime must come clean before the world regarding its illicit nuclear activities", the White House statement declares.
The newly released images by the US are reported to have been obtained by Israel, and to demonstrate the striking similarities between the North Korean nuclear reactor and the one in Syria.
The CIA also claims that one of the images shows the heads of the North Korean and the Syrian nuclear programs standing together.
The USA is seriously concerned about North Korea's nuclear proliferation activities, and the future of the Six Party Talks on the North Korean nuclear program.
