A ship carrying weapons to Zimbabwe would probably return to China after neighbouring countries refused to unload it, China's foreign ministry has said.
"To my knowledge, the Chinese company has decided to recall the ship," ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said, as cited by BBC.
The shipment was supposed to arrive amid a standoff in Zimbabwe over the presidential elections held more than three weeks ago.
Jiang defended the shipment as a normal arms transaction and said the contract had been signed last year.
Critics of the regime of President Mugabe say that the revelation there was a Chinese ship carrying small arms for Zimbabwe has confirmed Mugabe indeed declared war on his opposition.
The shipment contains millions of bullets for AK- 47 assault rifles as well as mortar bombs and rocket- propelled grenades.
"Those weapons were not going to be used on mosquitoes but clearly meant to butcher innocent civilians," Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) had said in a statement.
