US President George Bush is to meet Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea coastal town of Sochi in April at Putin's invitation, officials announced.

Bush intends to visit Sochi after a stop in Croatia on April 5, US National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley said, as cited by CNN.
Experts suggest the main topic of the meeting will be US plans to install interceptor missiles in Eastern Europe.

The Bush administration says the defence system, components of which are to be set up in Poland and the Czech Republic, is designed to defend against attacks from "rogue states," not from Russia.

Outgoing Putin on the other hand, proposed during a July meeting with Bush in Maine, that the missile defence system must be a joint operation and be based in countries such as Azerbaijan or even Iraq.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates went to Moscow earlier this month to meet with Putin over the issue and declared "progress was made."

"There are still a lot of outstanding problems that need to be discussed," Putin commented after the discussions.
