Serbs from the southern parts of Kosovo should move to the north and eventually merge with Serbia, Former Russian FM Yevgeni Primakov said.

" I am aware that some could criticize me for saying that the Serbs need to leave the central parts of Kosovo, but I believe that this could be a solution," Primakov told Vecernije Novosti daily, as cited by B92.

According to Primakov, the US are relying on NATO presence in Kosovo but they still cannot keep forces in the region forever.

"They too will have to look for a modus vivendi. If clashes continue, another solution will need to be found to get out of this situation," Primakov warned.

"The recognition of Kosovo independence was not a very well conceived move by the West. It is not a wise move by the Americans and their allies in Europe, and it could lead to repercussions that will endanger the current borders in the Balkans and destabilize the situation," he said.

Primakov added that the process of merging and changing borders could move in two separate directions.

"On the one hand, the Albanians moving to Macedonia, Montenegro and even Serbia will be active. On the other hand, what happened in Kosovo could also have an impact in Bosnia," he said.

Primakov also said it should be taken into account that an independent Kosovo represented the beginning of the creation of a strong Muslim country in the middle of Europe.
