The recognition of the two breakaway Georgian provinces Abkhazia and South Ossetia would be a big mistake according to the US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried. Map by globalsecurity.org
The US Assistant Secretary of State has warned against the recognition of the breakaway Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
"We insist on preserving Georgia's territorial integrity and on the peaceful settlement of the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia within the country's internationally recognized borders", Daniel Fried stated.
The statement of the US diplomat comes in the wake of a move by the Russian Parliament (Duma), which suggested to the country's government and president that the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia should be recognized.
The proposal was engulfed in an official document approved by the Duma in response to the appeal that the two breakaway regions submitted to Russia.
The move does not necessarily mean that Russia is going to recognize the two wannabe states according to the Russian political scientist Sergey Markedonov, quoted by the Novosti News Agency, because the President has the final word on the country's foreign policy.
