At least four people died and about 160 people were injured after powerful explosions rocked an army munitions depot some 20 kilometres north of Albanian capital Tirana on Saturday.

The blasts continued for about two hours, while the initial explosion was so loud that it was heard in neighbouring Macedonia, 150 kilometres away, local media reported.

Prime Minister Sali Berisha described the situation as "very serious" and added that most of the casualties were civilians from the nearby villages.

The Tirana airport, which is a kilometre away from the depot, was immediately closed down and all flights cancelled until further notice.
