Serbia's government proposed the date for new parliamentary elections to be May 11 after the cabinet collapsed because of an impasse over how Kosovo's independence affects Serbia's pursuit of EU membership.

A statement from the Monday's session said that the government has determined "it no longer has a united and common policy", confirming its collapse, B92 reported.

On Saturday, Serbian PM Vojislav Kostunica resigned, pointing out that the Serbian government no longer had a united stance regarding its policy over Kosovo.

Kostunica said his government could no longer function alongside President Boris Tadic's pro-Western Democrats because of their insistence on pursuing EU membership despite 18 of the 27 member states of the bloc recognized Kosovo's independence.

According to Kostunica, Kosovo's declaration of independence is a sign of new beginnings in Serbia, just like after the fall of late Serbian strongman Slobodan Milosevic.
