The French Socialist Party is leading against the President Sarkozy's UMP party in the first round of the French local elections, the BBC reported.

Based on a count of 65,7% of the votes, the UMP has 45,5% vs. 47% for the Socialists.

The French municipal elections are widely seen as a test of the Nicola Sarkozy's first year as President. Sarkozy's popularity has been on the wane in the recent months, and the current election results are believe to confirm this trend.

Socialist leader Francois Hollande declared that the French voters had sent a warning to Sarkozy and his government over their policies.

The lead of the Socialist party, however, is not as decisive as predicted. The second round of the elections is going to take place on March 16.
