LOW TURNOUT MARKED LOCAL PARTIAL ELECTIONS

Low electoral turnout was registered at the extraordinary local elections in the towns of Russe, Blagoevgrad, Tsarevo and Omurtag that took place on April 20. Some 25 percent cast their vote in Blagoevgrad, 35 percent in Tsarevo, 31,5 percent in Omurtag, 20 percent in Russe. Preliminary results from the elections showed that there will be run-offs in Russe and Blagoevgrad. Engineer Geno Genov (43 percent), supported by the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the Movement for Freedoms and Rights and the Simeon II National Movement and Eleonora Dimitrova (41 percent), supported by the Union of Democratic Forces and eighteen more rightist parties will run for mayor next Sunday in Russe. The candidates of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the Bulgarian Communist Party Vikotor Asiiski (35 percent) and Lazar Prichkapkov (23 percent) respectively will run at the second round of the local elections in Blagoevgrad. Petko Arnaudov, Bulgarian Socialist Party candidate, is the new mayor of the town of Tsarevo. Enver Ahmed, supported by the Movement of Rights and Freedoms was elected mayor of Omurtag.
