The ruling Spanish Socialist Workers' Party of the PM Zapatero won the general elections on Sunday with a narrow margin over its closest rival, the Popular Party, the BBC reported.

The Socialists carried 43,7% of the vote vs. 40,1% for their main opponents in the elections with an almost record turnout of 75,3%.

This gives them 169 MPs in the 350-seat lower house of the parliament, known as the Congress of Deputies, five more than they won in the general elections in 2004 but still not enough for an absolute majority of 176 deputies.

The BBC predicts the Socialists would most likely form a coalition with the largest Catalan nationalist party.

Unlike the 2004 elections which were dominated by the April 11 terrorist attacks in Madrid, the key issue in the 2008 elections was the economy.
