The initial assessment of Bulgaria's achievement in the field of nuclear safety included in the second national nuclear safety report is extremely positive, the Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy announced. Britain, Spain and Turkey congratulated Bulgaria for the report. The participants in the plenary session when the report was presented said that the recommendations made on the first report had been implemented and that Bulgaria maintained a high level of operational safety. Bulgarian experts presented the second national report on the Convention on Nuclear Safety on April 18 in Vienna . Energy Minister Milko Kovachev and Emil Vapirev, head of the Committee for the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes attended the meeting. The presentation aimed to reveal the high level of safety, achieved by Bulgaria's nuclear facilities. The Bulgarian experts had to answer 147 questions set forth by foreign experts. The report includes an expert statement about the modernization of third and fourth units of Kozloduy. Bulgaria's second national report on nuclear safety will continue to be discussed next week too. The final meeting on the review of the national reports will be held on April 26. Bulgaria as state participating in the Convention on Nuclear Safety is obliged to prepare and present similar reports once in three years. The Convention on Nuclear Safety was adopted in Vienna on 17 June 1994. Its aim is to legally commit participating countries operating land-based nuclear power plants to maintain a high level of safety.
