Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg pays a five-day visit visit to the United States, starting from April 20. This is the first visit to the United States by a Bulgarian head of government at the invitation of a US President. Upon leaving, Saxe-Coburg said that he did not expect more direct support for Bulgaria’s NATO bid on behalf of US President Bush. “We leave with moderate optimism and interesting expectations,“ he added. Saxe-Coburg will meet with President Bush on April 23. Talks on Bulgaria’s NATO membership are expected to top the agenda of the visit of the Bulgarian prime minister. Bulgaria hopes to receive invitation for NATO membership at the summit in Prague this autumn. Fight against terrorism and organized crime, the situation in the Middle East and bilateral cooperation within the UN Security Council will also be front and center in the talks with high-ranking US officials. A visit of Bulgaria's Foreign Minister Passy in March preceded the visit of the prime minister in Washington.
