After surviving a botched coup attempt, President Hugo Chavez won a precarious second honeymoon Monday from the opposition that gave him a chance to reach out to the business elite and upper classes that rose up to overthrow him last week. "The entire government is ready to make changes," Defense Minister Jose Vicente Rangel said at the Miraflores Presidential Palace, and denied rumors that the government had embarked on a witchhunt of opponents or was arbitrarily detaining civilians. He said the entire Cabinet named by Pedro Carmona, who took over the presidency during Chavez's two-day ouster, had been freed from captivity. He did not clarify whether the government had changed its mind about charging them. But Carmona himself remained in custody at secret police headquarters, and his family, friends and attorneys were allowed to visit him, Rangel said.
