The Israeli military carried out two airstrikes Thursday in northern Gaza, killing six people, Palestinian security sources said, as cited by CNN.

Violence in the region escalated, as Israeli PM Ehud Olmert vowed to wage a war to stop rocket attacks on the Jewish state.

One of the air strikes hit a wagon killing an Islamic Jihad militant and his mother, the Palestinian sources reported.

A civilian driving a nearby car also died in the strike, they said.

According to Palestinian security sources, Israeli aircraft bombed a car and killed three members of the Popular Resistance Committee's military wing early on Thursday.

The Israeli military confirmed two airstrikes, saying the second one targeted a rocket-launching squad after it fired missiles towards Israel.

The bombings come a week after the visit by U.S. President George W. Bush, who intended to spur peace talks in the region.
