At least 25 people were killed and dozens wounded in a suicide bomb attack in the Pakistani city of Lahore on Thursday.

According to authorities, the suicide bomber blew himself up among police guards deployed in front of Lahore High Court, killing 22 officers and three civilians, CNN reported.

The blast occurred in the city's commercial district, moments before lawyers were set to begin a rally outside the high court.

The bomber was apparently targeting police officers, officials have said.

The blast comes a day before the start of the month of Muharram, a holy period of mourning, when religious tensions in the country are high.

It also follows the death of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, who was killed in a bombing attack at a rally in Rawalpindi in southern Pakistan on December 27.
