Democrat Clinton, Republican McCain Clinch New Hampshire Polls

New York senator Hillary Clinton the Democrat primary and Arizona senator John McCain the Republican counterpart vote in New Hampshire late on Tuesday, boosting their bids to win the White House nomination of their respective parties.

Last week, Illinois senator Barack Obama upset Clinton's campaign by coming from behind to win by a wide margin in the Iowa caucuses.

He was tipped to consolidate that win by taking New Hampshire as well, but it was Clinton's turn to prove opinion polls wrong, winning 39% of the vote to recover from the hit inflicted by her third-place finish in Iowa.

Obama was second with 36%, congratulating his opponent, while John Edwards, who toured the small East Coast state more than either of his two rivals, came in third with only 17%.

On the Republican side, McCain needed a win to re-assert his own campaign. Considered the party's leading candidate halfway through 2007, he has lost ground due to some unpopular stances on issues like emigration.

But he won 37% in the state, with Mitt Romney, the former governor of neighbouring Massachusetts, finishing second again, as he did in Iowa.

Last week's Republican winner Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor who is an ordained minister, was only third, with his strong religious message proving less popular on the East Coast than it did in the Midwest.

The next primaries will be held in Michigan on January 15 and South Carolina, where Republicans will hold primaries on January 18 and the Democrats on January 26.

While hardly indicative of nationwide sentiment, the early primaries have in the past served to change the momentum of some campaigns, influencing the primaries in the bigger states, which are held later down the line.
