BULGARIAN-PRODUCED FILM WINS NINE DAVID'S DI DONATELLO AWARDS

Produced by Bulgaria's Boyana Film the Italian film "Il Mestiere delle Armi" ("The Profession of Arms"), a military epic, won nine of the 2002 4th David di Donatello awards, which is the Italian equivalent of the Oscars. It was awarded in the categories for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Music, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing and Best Producer. The film, directed by Ermanno Olmi, is set in Lombardy in 1520. Young Bulgarian actor Hristo Zhivkov is cast in the leading part, of Papal condottiere Giovanni di Medici. Supporting actors include another two Bulgarians: Dessie Tenekidzhieva and Dimiter Rachkov. Nearly half of the motion picture was shot in Bulgaria in January and February 2000. Considered a serious and highly intellectual film as it is, "The Profession of Arms" has also been a major box-office hit in Italy. It is now distributed on video cassettes and DVD. In Bulgaria the film was presented at Sofia's Cinemania last November.
