At least 23 people have been killed and 27 more are missing in the Philippines following a fire on a passenger ferry in the seas southeast of Manila. The ferry, the MV Maria Carmella, had set sail from the island of Masbate but was abandoned due to the fire just an hour from its destination of Lucena in Quezon province, about 110km from Manila. Montenegro Shipping Lines, which owns the Carmela, said a total of 219 people had been rescued from the burning vessel.
