Upping the stakes in a bitter dispute that has cut Venezuela's oil exports, the country's largest labor confederation announced late Wednesday it will extend its 48-hour general strike indefinitely. Carlos Ortega, president of the 1 million-member Venezuelan Workers Confederation, gave few specifics for the decision, other than to cite "reprisals" by President Hugo Chavez's government involving some "actions in the street." The decision was certain to anger Chavez's leftist government, which contends that the confederation and Fedecamaras are seeking to incite the armed forces to overthrow Chavez.
