Denmark's governing coalition, led by Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, has won the early general election, but is one seat short of an absolute majority, BBC reported Wednesday.
With all the votes counted, the centre-right government has taken 89 of the 179 seats in the country's parliament, the Folketing as the turnout was set at over 86%.
PM Rasmussen, who won a third consecutive election after the 2001 and 2005 victories, could be forced to seek support from the New Alliance party, headed by the Syrian-born Palestinian immigrant Naser Khader.
Recently formed New Alliance party won five seats, holding the balance of power in the new parliament.
Mr Khader has said his choice would be to side with the current prime minister but still many experts expect negotiations along the way.
There has been much campaign wrangling about welfare and tax reforms, immigration and the environment.
