A total of nine people died and 2,7 million evacuated after the powerful typhoon Wipha slammed into China's east coast early on Wednesday, CNN reported.

Typhoon Wipha has already weakened as it slammed the country with strong winds and torrential rains.

The storm destroyed thousands of homes, disrupted power to more than 100 communities and triggered landslides.

Wipha was downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm on Wednesday after it hit land in southern Zhejiang province.

Five people died in landslides in the province, and two were electrocuted while trying to weather-proof their homes in Jiangsu province.

The number of the people declared missing so far is three.

Preliminary estimates put the damage at USD 638 M.
