GABROVO'S HUMOUR HOUSE MARKED ITS 30TH ANNIVERSARY

The House of Humour and Satire in the world capital of humour – Gabrovo, celebrated its 30th anniversary on Fool’s Day April 1. A national annual cartoon exhibition was opened to mark the event. Among the other events in the program were the shows of Romanian cartoonist and graphic artist Ion Barbu, French graphic artist Jacques Pasquier, Bulgarian photographer Ljulin Stamenov and painter Ivan Marinov. Laugter makes the world go round is the motto of this unusual cultural centre, established on 1 April 1972. The House of Humour and Satire, unique in the Balkans, aims at tracing, preserving and popularising humour from different nations and of different genres - painting, drawing, sculpture, literature, cinema, theatre, music and photography. One of the most important events on the bill of the House is the international biennial of humour and sature in the arts, which has been held regularly in May of every odd year since 1973. The House of Humor and Satire has 10 exhibition halls with a total area of 8,000 sq m and its own recording studio. It keeps a database with the contacts of 12,450 authors and 4,750 institutes of 157 countries across the world. Its stock includes 49,440 art pieces by 6,830 authors and another 196,650 pieces of museum and documentary value. Its library has 25,000 volumes of literature and 1,00 volumes of periodicals in 35 languages. There is also the Collection of Gabrovo Anecdotes, which has seen 43 editions in 20 languages.
