Former French Prime Minister Raymond Barre died on Saturday at the age of 83, a family member said.

Barre replaced Jacques Chirac in 1976 to serve as French prime minister during the presidency of Valery Giscard d'Estaing, who described him as "the best economist in France."

He held the post until the victory of the Socialists under Francois Mitterand in 1981.

The 83-year-old economist also served as mayor of France's second city of Lyon from 1995 to 2001.

Barre suffered cardiac problems in April. He died at the Val de Grbce military hospital in Paris.
