POLICE CHECKS ON SOFTWARE LICENSES CONTINUE

During ongoing police checks of software licenses, unlicensed software worth USD 50,000 has been seized at a Sofia private company. Representatives of the company failed to present licenses for using the numerous copies of Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, MS Office 97 Pro, Norton Commander, among others. Nor were there any documents on how the software has been bought. Software piracy in Bulgaria stands at 78%, twice the level in Western Europe where it is 34%, a report of the world agency for market analyses Datamonitor shows. According to the report the losses the Bulgarian economy may suffer from copyright violations could reach USD 75 M. Last week Microsoft Bulgaria officially launched the first Bulgarian version of Windows XP Professional, Office XP Professional and Office XP SBE. Bill Gates, Microsoft's Chairman and Chief Software Architect congratulated the Bulgarian users on the occasion with a special letter. Dimitur Kalchev, State Administration Minister, said that the Cabinet has taken the political decision to start negotiations on Microsoft suggestion for signing a subscription contract.
