NO NATO REQUEST FOR AIR SPACE SO FAR

Politics | April 1, 2002, Monday // 00:00

It is my personal position that Bulgaria won't refuse to grant air corridors and military airports for attacks against Iraq if NATO demands these, Parliamentary Speaker Ognyan Gerdzhikov said upon his return from Bucharest where he paid a three-day visit at the head of a parliamentary delegation. According to Gerdzhikov, having once agreed to be a member of the anti-terrorist coalition, Bulgaria cannot be indifferent to such a request. He expressed the hope that no such demand will be made. In Bucharest the Bulgarian MPs met with President Ion Iliescu, Prime Minister Adrian Nastase, House of Deputies President Dorneanu and Senate President Nicolae Vacaroiu. Gerdzhikov described the visit as very successful. Asked to comment a statement by socialist leader Sergey Stanishev that a government crisis is looming, Gerdzhikov said he couldn’t accept that.
