The natural position for the Coalition for Bulgaria, dominated by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), in the 39th National Assembly is in opposition. The formation should not object if coalition experts are invited to the executive, BSP leader Georgi Purvanov said in his report to the BSP Supreme Council, quoted by Bulgarian Press Agency. He reiterated the election campaign tagline of the coalition that the best scenario for Bulgaria is a programme government dominated by technocrats with broad coalition support. Purvanov requested a vote of confidence from the SC and said he takes the responsibility for the election defeat. In his view, the reason for that failure is that the voters did not perceive Coalition for Bulgaria as a real alternative to the governance of the Union of Democratic Forces. He said he was concerned over the fact that 23 per cent of the people that voted for the BSP in 1997 now supported the Simeon II National Movement. This figure cannot be offset by the 5,000 new voters that the coalition attracted this time around, he said. In order to achieve greater efficiency in the future parliament, the Left, which considers itself to be the only center-left party at the moment, will interact closely with the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF). The latter will continue to co-underwrite the stability and constructive approach in the next parliament and possibly will do the same in the executive, Purvanov said. As an opposition force, Coalition for Bulgaria is prepared to assist the government in its effort to curb corruption, poverty and unemployment, to preserve the financial stability and to ensure transparency in privatization. Open Forum leader Krasimir Premyanov described Purvanov`s vote-of-confidence request as a sign of political maturity. He advised that the coalition does not link itself with SNM if some of its experts are invited to the executive. According to Premyanov, the post-election political course of the party should be determined at a party congress.
