One week after the scandal broke, President Parvanov received late on March 27 the shorthand report from the closed governmental meeting, during which the contract with Britain’s company Crown Agents was discussed. The company was hired to reform the Bulgarian customs. Scandal over the contract shook the country last week when a series of transcripts from closed governmental meetings were published in Bulgaria’s daily Trud. The shorthand reports showed that the cabinet was deliberately looking for ways to bypass the Public Procurement Act, which is normally applied for all government contracts. “Strict control over the customs is necessary and I hail the intention of the government to impose it,” Parvanov pointed out before leaving for Tirana where he is to attend 5th Southeast European Cooperation Process (SEECP) summit. “I realize that there are interests of economic groups, hurt by the contract with Crown Agents, “ the president commented. However, he said that it was weird why the whole process stayed hidden from the society.“I cannot understand why there are no guarantees for increase in the revenues from customs, considering the fact that this is the aim of the undertaken measures,” Parvanov emphasized.
