Life of Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat in Europe's Heaven for Food and Alcohol

Letters to the Editor | July 14, 2007, Saturday // 00:00

Dear Editor,

I am so concerned that there was a conducted EU Survey revealing the above [Bulgaria, Europe's cheapest for Food and Alcohol] without a corresponding and more important Survey on Wage/Pension Packets and general Standard of Living costs in Bulgaria.

In my opinion one cannot, and should not, be conducted without the other, if things are to be put into perspective.

The average pensioner in Bulgaria gets 110 Lev per month, village workers - av. 250 Lev per month.

What never seems to be surveyed is that people, particularly in villages and small towns, if they didn't have their gardens and livestock - a life of 'blood, toil, tears and sweat' - they'd be 'throwing up daisies'.

If the above has some way of being brought to notice, I'd be grateful.

Thank you,
Mrs J Crowie
