More than 1,800 people are feared dead and thousands have been left homeless after a series of earthquakes struck Afghanistan's remote northern province of Baghlan, Reuters reported. Afghan officials cited figures of between 1,800 and 4,800 dead, while the defence ministry confirmed the recovery of 600 bodies from the devastated town of Nahrin and 14 surrounding villages. The quakes began on Monday and were still producing aftershocks on Tuesday afternoon local time. Afghanistan's interim government pleaded for international assistance as its head, Hamid Karzai, called off a scheduled visit to Turkey.
