A heavy gunbattle broke out in an ethnic Albanian village in Macedonia on Monday night, killing one person, diplomatic sources said. Witnesses in Mala Recica, a village on the southern outskirts of the western city of Tetovo, said heavy exchanges of machine-gun fire could be heard for around 40 minutes. They said the fighting seemed to be between ethnic Albanian groups. The local headquarters of the disbanded National Liberation Army guerrilla force appeared to have been a target. A diplomatic source told Reuters one person had been killed in the fighting. A senior Macedonian government official said no state security forces were in the area.
