History was made at the Oscars on Sunday night when for the first time in the awards' 74 years its top acting honors were won by black performers, including the first ever best actress award to an African American. "A Beautiful Mind" was named best picture and its director, Ron Howard, was named best director. The show was easily and winningly stolen by a shaking, sobbing Halle Berry, who became the first black woman to be named the year's best actress for her work in the racially charged drama "Monster's Ball." Denzel Washington won for best actor for his portrayal of a corrupt policeman in "Training Day" and was given an honorary Oscar for his lifetime work.
