Italian fashion designer Gianfranco Ferre died on Sunday in the San Raffaele hospital in Milan after suffering a brain haemorrhage, the BBC reported.
Ferre, who was taken to hospital after massive cerebral haemorrhage on Friday, was in a stable, if serious condition, throughout the day.
Starting as a jewellery and accessories designer in the 1970s, he then moved onto clothing and became top designer at Christian Dior in 1989.
He left the French fashion company in 1996 to work on his own label, which he sold in 2002, staying on as creative director. His latest menswear collection was due to be presented in Milan next week.
An architecture graduate, he was often called "the architect of fashion' and has won Italy's L'Occhio d'Oro award several times.
