Former United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim died of heart failure, aged 88, Austrian media reported on Thursday.
Waldheim was at the helm of the organisation between 1972 and 1982, later serving as Austrian president following elections in 1986.
His time in office at the UN coincided with the mounting tension in the Middle East, when he, memorably, was refused audience by Iran's ayatollah Khomeini during the US hostage crisis in Tehran.
He was also the target of international controversy, with rampant allegations that he was responsible for the deaths of thousands of people in Greece and Yugoslavia during his time as German officer in World War II.
