GERMAN-RUSSIAN MAPS - SUBCONTRACTOR IN MIG-29 UPGRADE

German-Russian company MAPS (MiG Aircraft Product Support GmbH) was selected by the Defense Ministry as a subcontractor in the project on upgrading Bulgaria’s MiG-29 fighter aircraft. The company did not participate in the tender for upgrading Bulgaria’s MiG-29s, finally won by Russian RSK MiG. MAPS was chosen to participate in the upgrade of the fighters since the Russian company was found unable to carry out the upgrade in accordance with NATO standards. MAPS was set up in 1993 and carried out the upgrade of the 23 German MiG-29 jets. The contract with the other subcontractors is expected to be signed next week. EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co), which holds 51% in MAPS, submitted documents to bid in the tender for MiG-29 upgrade. On February 19 Defense Minister Nikolay Svinarov announced RSK "MiG" won the tender. "Only MiG was able to get to the final stage of the tender procedure, since the other companies did not comply with formal criteria,“ Svinarov commented. At the beginning of March EADS demanded that the Cabinet take a new political decision on the companies, which are to carry out the upgrade and overhaul of the Bulgarian MiG-29 fighter aircraft.
