Bulgaria deputy state head, retired Gen. Angel Marin, on Monday apologized for the assimilation campaign carried out against Turks living in Bulgaria during the communist era.

Marin made the statement on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the assimilation campaign against Turkey.

"I feel embarrassed that such an oppression took place in my country," Marin said.

Marin said that he had not personally or actively taken part in the assimilation campaign, "but we are all guilty as we stay silent and indifferent to this crime," Marin added.
