PASSY: EU PREPARES TEN WEDDINGS AND TWO FUNERALS

Bulgaria hopes to open the remaining two chapters ”Agriculture” and “Monetary Union” during Spain’s Presidency of the European Union, Foreign Minister Passy said in his speech to the delegates of the three-day international Wilton Park Conference dedicated to EU enlargement. He recalled that Bulgaria has accepted strategies for combat against corruption, reform in the judicial system and acceleration of the negotiations with the European Union. According to Passy the decision Bulgaria and Romania not to be accepted to EU in 2004 with the first wave of applicant countries violates the opportunity for equal chances in the accession process. “EU prepares ten weddings and two funerals, “ Passy said. At the Laeken meeting last year, the EU officials declared that Bulgaria and Romania are not ready to join EU with the first wave of candidate states.75 representatives from EU member and aspirant countries, take part in the conference. Wilton Park, British Foreign Office world famous conference centre for discussion of international issues, is among the organizers of the event. Wilton Park has organized a series of conferences in the EU candidate states for the last ten years. The idea to discuss Bulgaria’s EU bid in an informal atmosphere was given by the British Embassy and the European Institute in Sofia. It is also hoped that the conference will help Bulgarians understand better the EU entry. The discussions during the conference are confidential. EU Chief Negotiator with Bulgaria Michael Leigh, who arrived in Sofia March 18, is one of the participants in the Wilton Park Conference "Enlarging the European Union".
