“We had talks with all parliamentary groups and we acquainted them with all details on the brady bonds swap. We had their support and I am surprised that such reactions followed, “ Finance Minister Velchev said asked to comment the demand of the United Democratic Forces President Parvanov to veto the Act on foreign debt restructuring. In a separate development on Friday, former Prime Minister Ivan Kostov expressed the stand that the deal, proposed by the Finance Ministry was not good for Bulgaria in a letter to Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg. On March 13, Parliament approved the proposal of the Finance Ministry for Bulgaria’s foreign debt restructuring, according to which the exchange of part of Bulgaria's Brady bonds with new Eurobonds will result in net nominal reduction of Bulgaria's foreign debt of between USD 100 M and USD 125 M, some 8-10 %. The parliamentary groups of the United Democratic Forces and Coalition for Bulgaria, however, walked out of Parliament as a sign of protest against the proposal of the majority for ratifying the contracts before the vote on the brady bonds swap. No later than March 19 President Parvanov is expected to decide whether to impose veto on the Act on foreign debt restructuring, which the Parliament approved March 13. This emerged after his consultations with key experts on Bulgaria's external debt.
