Hardline Hindu leaders and followers have begun a highly anticipated and controversial march in northern India as thousands of troops and paramilitary forces look on. Authorities had estimated that about 2,000 Hindu activists would take part in the procession despite threats of arrest for anyone attending a prayer ceremony at a disputed religious site in the town Ayodhya. There are no signs of violence yet as the procession nears the site of a demolished mosque sacred to both Muslims and Hindus. The Hindu activists have been campaigning to rebuild a temple there and the prayer ceremony is intended to mark the start of construction.
