FINANCE MINISTER HAS TO REPORT ON STATE OF CUSTOMS BY MAY

Parliament obliged the Finance Minister to report by April 30 on the state of Bulgaria’s customs. The report should include the measures recommended by Britain’s company Crown Agents in its recent analysis. The report should also be submitted to the authoritative bodies within the European Union and the World Bank. Parliament debated the controversial contract of Bulgaria’s Agency Customs with Britain’s Crown Agents at a closed parliamentary session. In the end of 2001, Finance Minister Velchev signed an agreement with Britain’s company Crown Agents to reform Bulgaria’s customs. The debates were requested last week by MPs of “Coalition for Bulgaria.” MPs from the leftist party declared that they demand that the contract was cancelled since further execution would lead to huge financial damages for the country and will hamper Bulgaria’s negotiations with EU on Chapter 25 – Customs Union. The MPs overruled the proposal of the rightist United Democratic Forces to make public the Crown Agents contract. The proposal of “Coalition of Bulgaria” to terminate the contract was also overruled.
