France's presidential campaign got down and dirty Monday as Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin attacked Jacques Chirac as old and worn out and the president accused the left of using fascist methods.Jospin's unusually tough language, published as yet another poll showed him running ahead of the conservative Chirac, prompted the president's spokeswoman to say she was horrified to hear a candidate criticize a rival because of his age. Chirac was hardly more restrained, hinting darkly in an interview at Jospin's past as a secret Trotskyite militant and describing a renewed wave of sleaze charges against himself as "the methods of extremists and fascists."
