Bulgarian theatre students presented Wednesday Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's first complete play in Sofia.

Making this the final of their three thesis plays, the sophomores from the class of Atanas Atanasov presented "Ivanov", directed by Alexander Subev.

"There are no leading characters in Chekhov and the point of this play is working with the whole group," Subev commented for SNA shortly before the play's premiere.

"I chose this play because Chekhov looks at the problems of the young people in the end of the 19th century, but he does it in a way that still rings true even today."

It's important for young actors to know that theatre is not about being the lead but about having a strong team where everyone is just as important, Subev believes, adding that this was one of the main reasons to chose this play.

Chekhov wrote "Ivanov" when he was 27, and this was his first completed play. Bulgaria's audiences still haven't had many chances to see it.
