ONE THING, THAT WE ARE NOT GOOD AT IS NATIONAL ADVERTISING

Letters to the Editor | March 8, 2002, Friday // 00:00

As a continuation of the reader's reactions to the scandalous Newsweek article of February 25, and the publicity it received, the Editorial Staff received a letter from Gratsiella Dimitrova, addressed to Newsweek Editor Ms. Begley

Dear Ms. Begley,

For me is difficult to write in English, because my first languages are Russian and German, but I wanted to write you personally.

Our nation is living in very difficult situation and I'm not sure if Canadian people can live in such circumstances.

First I want to tell you, that many people are speaking one or two foreign languages, most of the people are intelligent and good-looking and that's the opinion of my foreign partners.
Do you know, that our education is very good, and up to 5-6 years there were no illiterate people or with no secondary education. In relation to other countries we have more high-educated people. Now the children are learning two foreign languages from the first class in school, and our computer education is one if the best in the world.

The Bulgarian people have old and interesting traditions, that are teaching people to be good and to be kind to the other people and to do good things only. This traditions were kept in spite of the 500 years Turkish slavery. Now we are living with the Turkish people in our country in good relationship.

I was many times in Germany, and also in other European countries like Italy, Switzerland, Austria, France and other - believe me our people are not worse, than the other nations.
Our people, in spite of the low standard of life, are always good dressed and the women are more elegant without expensive clothing from the famous fashion designers.

One thing, that we are doing not good, like the other countries do, is our national advertising. We have beautiful nature rivers and mountains, our black seacoast is also very attractive, but we are advertising them since 3-4 years. This beautiful nature and the important place of our state is the reason, that our country was many centuries in slavery, but at the beginning of this century our cultural position in Europe was in one of the first places.

We lived in socialisms 45 years and now we have many problems in state, but you have no right to underrate our nation.

I'm sure, you've written this with knowing only two-three persons from Bulgaria and want to invite you for two or three weeks to live in Bulgaria and to see our real life - the good things, and the bad things and to get the real impression for Bulgarians and Bulgaria.

Be sure no Bulgarian will write such "ugly" words for Canadians - and because such journalists like you have a tribune and write what they want - the world doesn't have the real look for Bulgaria.

Best regards,
Gratsiella Dimitrova
